Where we are
We are the largest tech guild in the nation with bargaining rights. We just won a landmark first contract with guaranteed annual raises, pay for on-call work, and fundamental protections like Just Cause after a groundbreaking strike.
Every day, members of our slate work to enforce our contract and member rights. We’re stewards, contract committee members, action organizers, and members like you who care deeply about our workplace conditions.
This election determines the vision for how we’ll enforce our current contract and bargain our new contract in 2028.
What we are fighting for
Our union will always fight for the rights of our unit, but we also recognize we have the opportunity to set a precedent and fight for seismic shifts in our broader workplace and industry.
The stakes are high - management continues to squeeze us more each day and find new ways to re-interpret our contract. And with the National Labor Relations Board itself under threat, it’s imperative that we build our collective strength by engaging every member of our unit.
If we want to see step changes in our working conditions, we must fight for our members’ highest priority goals. Democracy in our workplace is more important than ever.
Our leadership commitment
- We will be member-led
- Our strength comes from you and your expertise, so the power to set strategy and make decisions needs to rest in your hands. As your elected leaders, we would commit to lead, but not to carry, lifting up all members and enabling them to join in the work.
- We will be transparent
- As your elected leaders, we will commit to earning and sustaining your trust. We will commit to being as transparent as possible with our negotiations, and to have a clear communication strategy.
- We will move quickly and collectively for members
- We need a democratic and engaged unit that can balance cohesion and agility. We believe that good processes and strong communication can achieve that.
- We will set up strong systems that outlive us
- We want to establish processes that set our unit up for success in the long-term, through every strike and every grievance. We’re not management. We don’t have to replicate their structure. As we find what works, we can codify a foundation that will stand strong as different leadership groups come and go.
- We will be ambitious and creative to win big.
- We will start with what drives our members, and ask ourselves how we can build power to achieve those ambitions. We see our background as a distributed tech workforce as a strength, and will encourage members to pursue new tactics. We believe in an abundance mindset; we gain confidence in ourselves and trust in each other every time we try something new.

Who we are
Unit Officer Candidates
Jeff, Kait and Emma, are all coming to these roles from different circumstances - Kait and Jeff are parents of young kids. Kait is fully remote. Emma lives with chronic illnesses - and we know that is a reflection of the complex needs of our unit.
As your officers, we will lead by listening to you, standing strong in the face of pressure from management, and lifting up more leaders across our unit.
Name | Position | About me |
Jeff Sisson | Unit Chair |
I joined our union's underground organizing effort when a coworker told me about it on the day I came back from parental leave in 2019, and I've been active organizing as part of our union ever since: walking out with members of publishing teams in 2020, calling members ahead of our union's ratification vote, helping to negotiate on-call staffing norms before we had a contract, text banking and building outreach tech in the lead up to the strike, and helping to poll our entire unit about whether we'd be willing to strike longer. I want our union to solve real problems that members have on the job with the contract we have today, and set ambitious precedents for our industry with the contract we win in 2028. I believe the way we get there is by embracing democracy within our unit, and working with fellow rank-and-file members to help co-lead the way. |
Kait Hoehne | Unit Vice Chair |
I'm a senior software engineer who joined The Times and the Organizing Committee in 2020. I worked on the O.C. until we went public, and then spent 3 years as a shop steward, empowering and defending my coworkers. I also began handling our external comms, managing our press coverage, social media and public fundraising efforts through our contract fight and strike. I have taken two breaks - once when I had my son and again this year to deal with some health issues - and it taught me that this work is a marathon, not a sprint. I am committed to building a union of leaders where we elevate each other and protect each other from burnout, acting as a plurality and working to our strengths. I believe that’s the best way for us to fight for ambitious changes in our workplace. |
Emma Brennan-Wydra (EBW) | Unit Secretary |
I’m a data analyst, shop steward in DIG and Games, and head of the Performance Rating Appeals contract committee as well as a cross-shop working group focused on occupational health. |
Unit council candidates
We are running with a full unit council slate because our goals are shared - they don’t belong to any one of us - and we will need to act collectively to accomplish them. Our slate’s unit council candidates are a group of veteran organizers across the unit with a diversity of lived experiences. Our candidates have built relationships across all functions of workers, and have spent years organizing around issues such as RTO, performance, compensation, cross-unit solidarity, DEI, and unit jurisdiction to expand our union to more tech workers at the Times including: Wirecutter, The Athletic, and within the Times. As the Unit Council, we will be accountable, committed, and inclusive!
Name | Position | About Me |
Minerva A. | Unit Council | I’m a senior software engineer who joined the Times in 2018 and the Organizing Committee in 2019. I want our Unit Council to make organizing work manageable for more people and help build networks to amplify each other’s priorities. |
Nolan B. | Unit Council |
My first day at the Times was the same day our union went on strike. I joined my co-workers on the picket line that week, and was shown what collective action after years of diligent organizing could look like. I strongly believe in this slate's vision of a democratic, transparent, member-led strategy. |
Dylan C. | Unit Council |
I’m Dylan Campbell. I’m a steward for the producers in Games, and I really care about making our union strong by leaning on each other and keeping things democratic. I want to work with these wonderful people to make a better and more equitable workplace! |
Zoe C. | Unit Council |
As a Steward in the Ad Mission, I'm committed to building power in our unit, and I'll remain dedicated to do so on the unit council. I'm excited to continue to build a member-led union that's accessible to everyone. |
Gabriela C-C. | Unit Council | I've been organizing since joining the Organizing Committee in 2021. I’ve served on the Local Election Committee, Unit Council, and as a steward. I’m focused on worker power, a sustainable union, fair pay, remote work protections, time off, and reviving the Latinx & Black caucus. |
John C. | Unit Council |
As a steward, I fight for my colleagues, whether to beat unfair PIPs or to oppose layoffs that disproportionately impact visa holders. I am invested in building solidarity: within our union community, with our sibling unions at The Times, and with workers organizing across the tech sector and beyond. My experience teaches me that union power is built from the ground up. It starts when workers talk to each other. When we do that, we discover our power to act together. That is how contract language like Just Cause becomes real in practice. It is how we defend each other in moments of crisis. And it is how we will win the positive change we still need. On unit council, I will help put this vision of union democracy into practice. |
Shay C. | Unit Council |

I came to NYT in 2015 and have organized since 2019. I want our unit council to make our actions more inclusive, accessible, and participatory, so we can build power and solidarity without burning people out. |
Rohan R. | Unit Council |
Having stewarded over 20 people in 3 years, I have a keen understanding of the issues our coworkers face. My core principle is to leave no one behind; I organized town halls for our coworkers on visas and ensured our strike strategy included the needs of our most marginalized coworkers. As a unit council member, I am committed to keeping our leadership accountable, and creating a vision for our union that we all believe in. |
Jamal R. | Unit Council |
I've been at The Times since 2019, and was part of the later stages of the organizing effort. I remain committed to the strength of our union, and making sure everyone's voice is heard. |

I have been an organizer since 2019, serving on the organizing committee, unit council, contract action team, and bargaining committee. I'm passionate about remote work, on-call pay and a 4-day workweek. I'm excited to help organize for even more wins in our next contract. |
Vikram S. | Unit Council |
You might know me as one of the strike photographers, but I’m also your friendly neighborhood steward in Data Platforms. I’m committed to building a stronger union by elevating voices from all backgrounds and ensuring that everyone’s concerns are represented. |

I've had to work hard to even be included in our unit, and I understand personally how valuable our contract protections are. I can’t wait to build a more democratic unit together, and fight for an even better contract in 2028! |
Erica V. | Unit Council |
I'm Chair of the DEI contract committee, a unit council member, steward, and comms working group member. You can count on me for transparent communications so you can stay up-to-date and make informed decisions. |
